Postnatal Massage
Postnatal Massage is just as important as prenatal massage. The postpartum woman's body is undergoing dramatic changes throughout every system in her body. These physiological changes start occurring immediately after birth and some of the adaptations overlap into the later stages of recovery. Massage therapy can begin as soon as the new mother desires.
The techniques are similar to those of the prenatal massage, such as avoiding deep pressures and over stretching. The increased circulation of massage will help the new mother to heal as well as help with any insomnia or late nights while everyone adjusts to feeding times and a new lifestyle. Postnatal massage can also help relieve/release some of the stresses that come with being a new parent. The therapist will be able to give you some home exercises to start tightening up the abdominal muscles to reduce diastasis recti separation, stretches to help with the "new mom syndrome" of turned in or uneven shoulders from feedings, and neck stretches to help with the pain from looking at your beautiful baby so often. As everyone heals differently, and recovers at different times these treatments are really tailored to each client, every time they come in. Additionally, at Rediscover Massage Therapy we always make sure to do a quick reassessment at the beginning of each treatment in order to create the most effective treatment
plan and because so many changes can take place between visits.

The body cushion system shown below allows you to lay face down without putting pressure on your breasts, or abdomen that can still be quite tender. I generally use the cushion system from 6-12 week postpartum just to ensure your comfort! For postpartum appointments prior to 6 weeks we continue to use side lying cushions.
